Area Rug Cleaning in Delaware County, PA

Steamy Stuart’s cleans area rugs in-home across Garnet Valley, Delaware County, Chester County, and Wilmington, Delaware. Our IICRC-certified technicians use truck-mounted hot-water extraction calibrated to each rug’s fiber type โ€” wool, silk, cotton, synthetic, hand-knotted Persian, machine-woven Oriental, or modern flatweave. Rugs are cleaned on-site with no pickup or transport risk, and they dry in 4-6 hours.

Your Rugs Deserve More Than a Vacuum

Area rugs see more action than most homeowners realize. They sit in front of fireplaces, under dining tables, in entryways and high-traffic hallways โ€” collecting dust, dander, food crumbs, pet residue, and the dirt tracked in from outside. Vacuuming pulls the surface debris. Everything below the surface stays trapped in the fibers.

Area rugs are also more sensitive than wall-to-wall carpet. The wrong cleaning method can shrink wool, bleed dyes, damage hand-knotted fringe, or strip the natural oils from a Persian rug that’s been in your family for generations. Different fibers need different chemistry, water temperature, and technique. There’s no one-size-fits-all approach.

Steamy Stuart’s cleans area rugs in-home across Delaware County. Owner George Stuart and his son Gannon are both IICRC-certified โ€” the cleaning industry’s leading credential, with rug-specific training as part of the curriculum. We assess each rug’s fiber, age, and dye stability before any equipment touches it, then calibrate the cleaning approach to match. The result is a rug that comes out cleaner than the day you bought it, without the risks that come with pickup and transport.

Why Homeowners in Delaware County Trust Us With Their Rugs

Most cleaners treat every rug like wall-to-wall carpet. The rugs that survive that approach aren’t the ones you actually care about.
  • In-Home Service Only โ€” Your rugs never leave your home. No pickup, no warehouse storage, no transport risk, no waiting weeks to get them back. We clean them where they sit, and you have them back in the room before dinner.
  • IICRC-Certified Fiber Expertise โ€” George and Gannon hold IICRC certifications that include rug-specific training. We identify wool, silk, cotton, synthetic, and blend fibers before we start, and we adjust water temperature, pH, and pressure to match.
  • Truck-Mounted Equipment, Calibrated Down โ€” Our Butler System runs at full power for wall-to-wall carpet, but it adjusts down for delicate rugs. Lower pressure, lower temperature, gentler wand technique โ€” same equipment, calibrated for the surface.
  • Honest About Limits โ€” Some rugs shouldn’t be cleaned in-home. Antique silks, severely dye-unstable hand-knots, and badly damaged museum-grade pieces sometimes need a specialty rug-wash facility instead. We tell you that up front and recommend a trusted local shop if your situation calls for it.
  • 20 Years of Rug History in This Area โ€” We’ve cleaned rugs in homes built in the 1800s and homes built last year. Family heirlooms, estate-sale finds, IKEA flatweaves, $20,000 Persians. Whatever you have, we’ve handled the same kind before.

โ€ข 100% Satisfaction Guarantee โ€” If you’re not happy with the result, we come back and address it at no charge. Same standard we apply to every other service.

Every Rug We Clean โ€” From IKEA to Heirloom

We clean rugs across the full range of fibers, weaves, and price points. The technique changes for each. The standard of work doesn’t.

Hand-Knotted Persian and Oriental Rugs

True Persian rugs (Tabriz, Kashan, Isfahan, Qom) and hand-knotted Orientals from Pakistan, India, Afghanistan, and Turkey require the most careful approach. Lower water temperature, neutral-pH solutions, and dye-stability testing on the corner fringe before any wand touches the field. We treat these rugs the way we’d treat a piece of art โ€” because that’s what most of them are.

Wool and Wool-Blend Rugs

Wool is the most common natural fiber in modern area rugs โ€” found in Karastan reproductions, Stark wool blends, and high-end machine-woven pieces. Wool reacts to high temperatures by shrinking and to high pH by losing color. Our standard wool rug clean uses controlled-temperature water with neutral cleaning solution and immediate extraction to prevent over-saturation.

Synthetic Area Rugs (Nylon, Polyester, Polypropylene)

Modern synthetic rugs โ€” IKEA, Wayfair, Pottery Barn, Ruggable, West Elm โ€” handle hotter water and stronger solutions than wool. They’re designed to be cleaned aggressively and recover well. Most synthetic rugs come out looking nearly new after a single deep clean.

Specialty Pieces โ€” Silk, Antique, Custom

Pure silk rugs, antique pieces over 50 years old, and custom-dyed specialty rugs occasionally fall outside what we recommend cleaning in-home. The risks โ€” dye bleeding, fiber damage, dimensional distortion โ€” sometimes outweigh the benefits. We assess these case-by-case during the walk-through. If a specialty rug-wash facility is the right call, we say so.

In-Home Cleaning vs In-Shop Cleaning: Which Is Right for Your Rug?

Area rug cleaning comes in two formats. We do one of them. Here’s how to know which is right for your situation.

In-Home Cleaning (What We Do)

  • Truck-mounted hot-water extraction performed where the rug sits
  • Same-day service โ€” rugs dry in 4-6 hours
  • No pickup, no transport, no warehouse storage
  • You don’t lose use of the room for weeks
  • Right for: 95% of residential rugs โ€” wool, synthetic, machine-made Orientals, modern Persians, decorative pieces

In-Shop Cleaning (When We Recommend It Instead)

  • Specialty facility with full-immersion wash baths
  • Takes 2-4 weeks for pickup, wash, drying, and return
  • Higher cost, more involved process
  • Right for: pure silk rugs, severely fragile antiques, museum-grade hand-knots, rugs with major structural damage requiring restoration

If your rug needs in-shop cleaning, we’ll tell you during the walk-through and recommend a trusted local rug-wash facility. We don’t try to clean rugs in-home that shouldn’t be cleaned in-home โ€” and we don’t charge you for a job we shouldn’t do.ย

Add-On to Carpet Cleaning

Most cost-effective option
  • Add area rug cleaning to a 3-Room ($174) or 5-Room ($244) carpet cleaning visit
  • Same crew, same truck, same visit
  • Per-rug pricing based on size and fiber type
  • Best for: standard wool, synthetic, or modern Oriental rugs alongside scheduled carpet cleaning

Standalone Rug Cleaning

Just rugs, no carpet cleaning needed
  • In-home cleaning for one or more area rugs
  • Custom quote based on rug count, sizes, and fiber types
  • Walk-through assessment included
  • Best for: standalone rug projects, multiple rugs in one visit

Our Area Rug Cleaning Process โ€” Step by Step

Six steps, in the same order, every time. Step 1 is where we figure out exactly what we’re working with.

Step 1 โ€” Fiber and Dye Assessment

Before any cleaning solution touches the rug, we identify the fiber (wool, silk, cotton, synthetic, blend) and test dye stability on a corner of the field. Dye testing takes 60 seconds and prevents the worst outcome in rug cleaning โ€” dye bleed that ruins the pattern. If a rug fails dye stability, we stop and recommend a specialty rug-wash facility.

Step 2 โ€” Dry Soil Removal

We pre-vacuum both sides of the rug to lift dry soil out of the pile before water touches it. This step is skipped by most cleaners and matters most on hand-knotted rugs, where embedded sand and grit cut into the foundation knots over time.

Step 3 โ€” Pre-Treatment

Stains, traffic lanes, and pet-affected areas get a targeted pre-treatment calibrated to the fiber type. Wool gets a pH-neutral solution; synthetics handle a stronger one. Pre-treatments dwell for 5-10 minutes before extraction.

Step 4 โ€” Truck-Mounted Hot-Water Extraction

Our Butler System adjusts pressure and temperature down for area rugs compared to wall-to-wall carpet. The wand passes over the rug in slow, overlapping strokes that flush soil and pre-treatment out without over-saturating the foundation.

Step 5 โ€” Fringe Detail and Grooming

Hand-knotted rug fringes get separate attention โ€” gentle hand cleaning to lift soil without distorting the knots. After extraction, the entire pile is groomed with a soft-bristle rake to align the fibers and ensure even drying.

Step 6 โ€” Drying and Final Inspection

We position fans on the rug to accelerate drying โ€” most rugs are dry in 4-6 hours. Before we leave, we walk the rug with you, check for any spots that need re-treatment, and re-treat on the spot. The rug stays exactly where it was, and you have it back in the room before dinner.

FAQs

No โ€” we clean area rugs in-home, where they sit. Your rug never leaves your house. This eliminates transport risk and means you have your rug back in the room the same day, dry within 4-6 hours. For very fragile or antique pieces that need full-immersion in-shop washing, we’ll tell you during the walk-through and recommend a trusted local rug-wash facility.
Yes โ€” we clean both hand-knotted and machine-woven Persian and Oriental rugs. The approach is more careful than for synthetic rugs: dye stability testing, lower water temperature, neutral-pH cleaning solutions, and gentle wand technique. For severely fragile antiques or pure silk pieces, we may recommend a specialty rug-wash facility instead.
Dye bleeding is the biggest risk in area rug cleaning, and it’s why we test dye stability on a corner of the field before any cleaning solution touches the main rug. If the dyes are unstable, we stop and recommend an alternative. If they’re stable, the controlled cleaning approach prevents bleeding through the entire process.
Pricing depends on rug size, fiber type, and condition. The most cost-effective option is to add rug cleaning to a regular carpet cleaning visit (3-Room at $174 or 5-Room at $244). Standalone rug projects get a custom quote based on the specifics. Calls and quotes are free.
A typical area rug cleans in 30-60 minutes per rug, depending on size and condition. We can clean multiple rugs in a single visit, often paired with a carpet cleaning. Drying takes 4-6 hours after cleaning.
Yes. We use enzymatic pre-treatment paired with hot-water extraction to break down protein bonds in pet urine and vomit. Severe pet damage that has soaked through to the rug pad or floor underneath may need additional treatment โ€” we assess during the walk-through. See our pet stain and odor removal service for the full process.
Yes โ€” we move what needs moving. Light furniture, lamps, and decorative items come off. Heavy items (large couches, dining tables) stay where they are; we clean around them. After cleaning, we replace furniture on foam blocks or tabs to prevent stain transfer during drying.
What if the rug is on a hardwood floor?
Every 12-24 months for most rugs, depending on traffic and household. High-traffic entryway rugs may need every 6-12 months. Wool rugs in low-traffic areas can go 24-36 months between deep cleans. Pet households should clean more frequently.
We’re headquartered in Garnet Valley, Pennsylvania and serve Delaware County, Chester County, and Wilmington, Delaware. Cities served include Aston, Broomall, Glen Mills, Kennett Square, Malvern, Media, Newtown Square, Springfield, and West Chester.

Very happy with my experience. Arrived within my arrival window, were friendly and set expectations. Carpet and furniture look great, house smells amazing, and they even let me know what I can do to speed up dry time with box fans so my dog can lay back down in his favorite spot sooner. Highly recommended!

Quick, friendly, and very fair pricing! They were cheaper than any of the big chains. In fact they were less than half any of the other places I asked and even did a better job than places I have gone to in the past. I had my sofa cleaned and itโ€™s as good as new! Highly recommend to anyone looking for residential cleaning services!
